How to price nail art per nail and by tier

Price nail art as an add-on per nail, in three or four tiers (simple, medium, complex, 3D or charms), each from the minutes it really adds and the product it uses. A full set of detailed art is a different booking: price it by the total time, not by adding up per-nail prices you guessed at the desk.

What it is, from the salon side

Nail art is anything added on top of a colour: lines, dots, French, stamping, hand-painted designs, foils, stickers, 3D gel and charms. For the owner it is pure time on top of the base service, and the time varies far more than the client expects, so a clear tier list protects your schedule and your price.

How much time to plan

AppointmentPlan for
Simple art (dots, lines, a sticker)+2–5 min per nail
Medium art (French, stamping, ombré)+5–10 min per nail
Complex hand-painted designDepends on detail and your speed+10–20 min per nail
3D gel or charmsIncludes placing and sealing+5–15 min per nail
Full set of complex artBook it as its own longer slot+45–90 min

Starting points for planning, not measured averages. Time your own appointments for two weeks and use your numbers.

What goes into the cost

  • Art gels, paints, foils, stickers and stamping plates used per client
  • Charms, stones and 3D gel, which cost per piece
  • Fine brushes, dotting tools and sealing top coat
  • Your time, including copying a reference photo and fixing mistakes
  • Practice time and samples you make for your catalog
  • A share of rent, power and software for every hour you work

How to set the price

  1. Time a few real designs of each tier on clients, not on practice tips, and note the minutes per nail.
  2. Set a target hourly rate and turn each tier into a per-nail price: minutes times your rate per minute, plus product.
  3. Price charms and stones per piece on top of the tier, since one large charm can cost more than the work.
  4. Enter the tiers in the calculator below, round to clean prices and compare with two or three salons near you.
  5. Show the tiers with photo examples in your price list, so the client picks a tier before she sits down.

Questions

How much should I charge for nail art?

There is no single right price: it depends on your time, product cost, overheads and local market. Set per-nail prices for each tier from your own numbers, then compare with salons near you.

Should I charge per nail or per set?

Per nail works well for a few accent nails. For art on all ten nails, price the set from its total time, since your speed changes once you repeat the same design.

How do I stop clients asking for complex art at a simple price?

Show photo examples for each tier and agree the tier and number of nails at booking or consultation, before you start.
